  Private Wilburn K. Ross

Citation:

For conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity at risk of life above and beyond the call of duty near St. Jacques, France. At 11:30 a.m. on 30 October 1944, after his company had lost 55 out of 88 men in an attack on an entrenched. full-strength German company of elite mountain troops, Pvt. Ross placed his light machinegun 10 yards in advance of the foremost supporting riflemen in order to absorb the initial impact of an enemy counterattack.
With machinegun and small-arms fire striking the earth near him, he fired with deadly effect on the assaulting force and repelled it. Despite the hail of automatic fire and the explosion of rifle grenades within a stone's throw of his position, he continued to man his machinegun alone, holding off 6 more German attacks. When the eighth assault was launched, most of his supporting riflemen were out of ammunition. They took positions in echelon behind Pvt. Ross and crawled up, during the attack, to extract a few rounds of ammunition from his machinegun ammunition belt. Pvt. Ross fought on virtually without assistance and, despite the fact that enemy grenadiers crawled to within 4 yards of his position in an effort to kill him with handgrenades, he again directed accurate and deadly fire on the hostile force and hurled it back.
After expending his last rounds, Pvt. Ross was advised to withdraw to the company command post, together with 8 surviving riflemen, but, as more ammunition was expected, he declined to do so. The Germans launched their last all-out attack, converging their fire on Pvt. Ross in a desperate attempt to destroy the machinegun which stood between them and a decisive breakthrough. As his supporting riflemen fixed bayonets for a last-ditch stand, fresh ammunition arrived and was brought to Pvt. Ross just as the advance assault elements were about to swarm over his position. He opened murderous fire on the oncoming enemy; killed 40 and wounded 10 of the attacking force; broke the assault single-handedly, and forced the Germans to withdraw.
Having killed or wounded at least 58 Germans in more than 5 hours of continuous combat and saved the remnants of his company from destruction, Pvt. Ross remained at his post that night and the following day for a total of 36 hours. His actions throughout this engagement were an inspiration to his comrades and maintained the high traditions of the military service.

Sgt. Ross: We humbly salute you and thank you for your service.

Trump Serve Man

Remember that episode of the Twilight Zone where the alien with the great big head came "to serve man"? One of the all-time great episodes! Although today, we probably couldn't call them "aliens", we'd have to say something like "undocumented extraterrestrials"!

Anyway, if you will recall, the aliens came to Earth, to eliminate hunger and famine, war and disease, and allow man to live a more pastoral lifestyle. They brought with them a book in their own language, whose title was translated "To Serve Man". Turns out (spoiler alert!) that after the people of Earth had laid down their arms and accepted all of the ministrations of the friendly aliens, they discovered the rest of the book was...a cookbook! "It's a cookbook!" the translator cried, as the aliens were herding members of the human race onto their ship for a "visit" to their planet, where the hapless Earthlings would fulfill their destiny as Trump steaks. One scene that didn't make it past the cutting room floor was the aliens handing out "Make Earth Great Again" hats!

So, I pondered this as I contemplated the meaning of "Make America Great Again". I mean, I know what it means to me and possibly you, but what exactly does it mean to Donald Trump? "Make America Great Again" is the great "Hope and Change" for 2016. Conservatives can project their own values onto it, but then, so can liberals! There's the whole question of "New York values". When Ted Cruz brought this up, he was quoting what Trump himself had said in an interview. It had nothing to do with 9-11, but that didn't stop Trump from wrapping himself in the flag and distorting the meaning of what Cruz was referring to. Much like the way Trump's words about Mexican immigrants was twisted out of context (for which I defended him) Trump had no problem twisting Cruz's quotation of his own words to imply that they had a different, more sinister meaning. Never mind that whole "Do unto others" thing!

And Trump says he will surround himself with "the best people". Best according to whom? What if Trump deems Chuck Schumer, Michael Bloomberg and Gavin Newsome as "the best people" to bring about what makes America great, and coincidentally liberal, in his eyes? Trump has a long record of donating to liberals, being on the liberal side (or both sides) of most issues. Personally, I think that Trump is a liar and will say basically anything about anything on any given day. When the dust has settled, which Donald Trump would America wake up with?

This may be moot as there are indications that Trump isn't trying very hard to win. Hillary Clinton has raised about 40 times as much cash as Trump, she has about a 20 to one margin* in state and national staff, not to mention the PAC money going to Hillary. One PAC alone has promised that Trump will run into a "billion dollar buzzsaw".

Trump has made pronouncements about not only not needing conservatives, but of not needing the Republicans in order to win. Sounds a bit delusional to me.

I was briefly encouraged when Trump published a list of Supreme Court justices he said would choose from. (His sister, whom he said would be a "phenomenal” SCOTUS was not on the list.) But then, within 24 hours, he backed away from that pledge and said he might pick someone on the list or he might not. Bold, decisive leadership!

His unfavorables are higher than "Lyin' Hillary's". And that's even before the billion dollar buzzsaw kicks in. If Trump is the candidate, he's already lost California and his home state of New York. At least Mondale carried Minnesota! Hillary got twice as many votes as Trump in the NY primary and if she gets Bernie's voters, the match could be as high as three to one. California hasn't elected a Republican in a statewide race in years. It would take a minimum of an FBI indictment to put a dent in Hillary's dominance in the Golden State.

What's the solution? First, for my friends the Branch Trumpidians: Sunshine, rainbows, lollipops, unicorns and wishful thinking. Run along now!

For the rest of us, if Hillary and Trump are the nominees, hunker down for at least four more years of Obama (eight, if she avoids his boneheaded economic policies) and a generation of liberal Supreme Court decisions. I wish our prospects were better, but I calls 'em like I sees 'em!

Good luck and Godspeed!

The 2016 Paul Revere Awards Are In

You LIKE me! You really LIKE me!! Well, some of you anyway! The Paul Revere award, created by Photoshop Superstar "Curmudgeon" over at Political Clown Parade, is to recognize the efforts of bloggers who aren't (yet) exactly household names.

Our award honors these bloggers because they, like Paul Revere, were not born to wealth.  They are ordinary men and women who are involved citizens keeping their readers informed of events which may touch their lives.

You may have noticed the badge over in the sidebar (we don't need no stinking badges!) that links over the the award and the other 19 recipients. It is simply an ugly rumor that the reason there are no more than 20 recipients is because she ran out of fingers and toes!

We at Proof Positive are grateful for the recognition, and will ever strive to uphold the high standards of this award. Congratulations to one and all recipients of the award this year!

"Using No-fly or Terror Watch List to Bar Gun Sales Still a Bad Idea"

Using no-fly or terror watch list to bar gun sales still a bad idea
-Mike Hashimoto

When well-meaning people get together to thrash out a grave national issue, expect them to circle back to a couple of premises:

First, let’s grab the “low-hanging fruit,” that supposedly simple starting point when apples or apricots are within easy reach.

Second, “It stands to reason …” As in, “It stands to reason that even well-meaning people will attempt to cram each new event into an existing worldview.” Short translation: It’s common sense, if only you had some.

So, guns in America.

Firearms work perfectly into our two premises, at least as seen by those who believe that each new mass shooting, however tragic on its face, is also reason to revisit ideas ranging from ineffective to useless. “Doing nothing is not an option,” unless doing something is worse.

One low fruit is the idea of using government databases like the no-fly list or terrorist watch list to determine who can buy firearms legally. Doesn’t it just stand to reason? Ask President Barack Obama...

Trump is the new Shibboleth

What amazes me is how many conservatives there were a year ago, Krauthammer, National Review, ...me...who determined for whatever reasons that Trump is not suited to be president, and without changing any other positions, all of a sudden, we are no longer conservatives, but somehow transmogrified into Republican party hacks, party elites and maybe even libertarians.

I don't impugn the conservatism of Trump supporters. They're wrong, but merely being a conservative does not make one immune to being conned. I do have trouble with the pseudo logic which says "I'm a conservative. I support Trump. You do not support Trump, therefore you cannot be a conservative." Feel free to disagree with me, but if you think somehow I'm no longer a conservative, then you're apt to be wrong about other things as well. (Hint, hint!)

Among some, support of Trump is the sole litmus test for being a conservative. If for some reason the convention denies Trump the nomination, I suspect that their ardent #NeverHillary fervor will evaporate as they take their ball and go home. If Trump is confirmed as nominee, a large portion of conservatives will abandon the Republican party. Either way, Trump destroys the Republican party. Any guesses as to whether or not any of his supporters will blame their flawed candidate for the results?

-originally posted as a comment over at Diogenes Middle Finger

The Bible's Book of Judges (12:4-6) tells the story of the Ephraimites, who, after they were routed by the Gileadite army, tried to retreat by sneaking across a ford of the Jordan River that was held by their enemy. The Gileadites, wary of the ploy, asked every soldier who tried to cross if he was an Ephraimite. When the soldier said "no," he was asked to say "shibboleth" (which means "stream" in Hebrew). Gileadites pronounced the word shibboleth, but Ephramites said "sibboleth." Anyone who left out the initial "sh" was killed on the spot. When English speakers first borrowed "shibboleth," they used it to mean "test phrase," but it has acquired additional meanings since that time.

Technician 5th Grade Robert D. Maxwell

Citation:

For conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity at risk of life above and beyond the call of duty on 7 September 1944, near Besancon, France. Technician 5th Grade Maxwell and 3 other soldiers, armed only with .45 caliber automatic pistols, defended the battalion observation post against an overwhelming onslaught by enemy infantrymen in approximately platoon strength, supported by 20mm. flak and machinegun fire, who had infiltrated through the battalion's forward companies and were attacking the observation post with machinegun, machine pistol, and grenade fire at ranges as close as 10 yards.
Despite a hail of fire from automatic weapons and grenade launchers, Technician 5th Grade Maxwell aggressively fought off advancing enemy elements and, by his calmness, tenacity, and fortitude, inspired his fellows to continue the unequal struggle. When an enemy hand grenade was thrown in the midst of his squad, Technician 5th Grade Maxwell unhesitatingly hurled himself squarely upon it, using his blanket and his unprotected body to absorb the full force of the explosion.
This act of instantaneous heroism permanently maimed Technician 5th Grade Maxwell, but saved the lives of his comrades in arms and facilitated maintenance of vital military communications during the temporary withdrawal of the battalion's forward headquarters.

Technician 5th Grade Maxwell: We humbly salute you and thank you for your service.

"Special agents at the IRS equipped with AR-15 military-style rifles? Health and Human Services “Special Office of Inspector General Agents” being trained by the Army’s Special Forces contractors? The Department of Veterans Affairs arming 3,700 employees?

The number of non-Defense Department federal officers authorized to make arrests and carry firearms (200,000) now exceeds the number of U.S. Marines (182,000). In its escalating arms and ammo stockpiling, this federal arms race is unlike anything in history. Over the last 20 years, the number of these federal officers with arrest-and-firearm authority has nearly tripled to over 200,000 today, from 74,500 in 1996.
